Very small businesses would not benfit. The smaller the business, the more broad the talent needs to be because people need to fill in for each other from time to time. If you have a business of 10 people, each with a specialized task, the business is in trouble when one of those people leaves or even gets sick for a day. I once witnessed a situation in the building I work in where at a Chinese food restaurant had a cashier who just didn't show up to work one day. The only other person working who could speak any English at all was one of the Chefs, and he had never worked the cash register. The second thing is how many hours do you want to work? Project management civil engineers tend to make more money but they also put in a lot more hours than designers. As far as transportation, structural, geotechnical, and water resources...I would say there's probably not much of a difference depending on your experience, or if you're right out of school, your favorite in studying. If you work for a design firm that does many of the above items, it shouldn't be too difficult to switch between specialties as desired or needed.
