Ireland (pronounced /ˈaɪrlənd/ ( listen), locally [ˈaɾlənd]; Irish: Éire, pronounced [ˈeːɾʲə] ( listen); Ulster Scots: Airlann) is the third-largest island in Europe and the twentieth-largest island in the world. It lies to the north-west of continental Europe and is surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets. To the east of Ireland is the island of Great Britain, separated by the Irish Sea. A sovereign state named Ireland, the same name as the island, covers five-sixths of the island. Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, located in the northeast of the island covers the remainder. The population of Ireland is estimated to be slightly over six million. Nearly 4.5 million people are estimated to reside in the Republic of Ireland and an estimated 1.75 million reside in Northern Ireland. This is a significant increase from a modern historic low of 4.2 million in the 1960s. However, it is still much lower than the peak population of over 8 million in the early 19th century prior to the Great Famine. The first settlements in Ireland date from around 8000 BC Celtic migration and influence had come to dominate Ireland by 200 BC. Relatively small scale settlements of both the Vikings and Normans in the Middle Ages gave way to complete English domination by the 1600s. Protestant English rule resulted in the marginalisation of the Catholic majority, although in the north-east, Protestants were in the majority due to the Plantation of Ulster. Ireland became part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. A famine in the mid-1800s caused large-scale death and emigration. The Irish War of Independence ended in 1921 with the British Government proposing a truce during which the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed, creating the Irish Free State. This was a Dominion within the British Empire with effective internal independence but still constitutionally linked with the British Crown. Northern Ireland, consisting of six of the 32 counties of Ireland, which had been established in 1921, immediately exercised its option under the treaty to retain its existing status within the United Kingdom. In 1937, a new constitution replaced the Irish Free State with a wholly independent state called Ireland, which later left the Commonwealth to become a republic in 1949. In 1973, both parts of Ireland joined the European Community. Conflict in Northern Ireland led to much unrest from the late 1960s until the 1990s, which subsided following a political agreement in 1998. The name Ireland (in modern Irish, Éire) derives from the name of the Celtic goddess Ériu with the addition of the Germanic word land. From Wikipedia under the

Q. the sinking of the Spanish Armada was a huge number of Spanish pirates in Ireland at that time? near which areas did they spread? and how many descendants do they have today in your opinion? (which percentage) and is this why people from Ireland looks quite differant (darker complex) than Scotts? which percentage of these moved to USA during "potato famine"? and which part of Spain did many of these pirates originate? how they got in? please explain. Thanks for your answers! btw, anyone know exactly which year the Spanish armies re inhabitated themselves in Ireland? Asked by Ramses - Sat May 2 12:02:16 2009 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments A. None or almost none. there were not that many survivors of the Armada and many who made it ashore were killed by terrified locals. There is a 'Spanish' connection, however, but it is far older than the Armada. the earliest people in Ireland moved thhere from Iberia around 8000 years ago and their dna is still the most prevalent, especially in the west.In those more remote areas, little affected by latercomers, the darker phenotypes seem to have been preserved more.Northern spain and the Basque region seems the main area for the geneflow but all of iberia, including Portugal saw this ancient movement of peoples along the westeern seaboard to Ireland and britain. We are going to buy a puppy. We have looked up basset hound breeders in Ireland and can't find any! However there is a breeder about 15 minutes away from our house! We were wondering about quarantine/rules bringing a dog to ireland? Should we get a pup here and go through it? Or should we wait and keep looking for one in Ireland? We have two bring over 2 rabbits as well. P.S: we are not entirely certain it will be a basset but it is a strong possibility! Q. Two of my friends and i would like to go to ireland for a week for our senior trip. Im just looking for any tips on cheap ways to fly or what the chepest hotels would be in places near Waterford. Asked by McFly247 - Tue Jan 15 12:24:14 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Ireland on a limited budget could be tough because it really is quite an expensive country.Dublin,in articualr is at leasat 20-30% dearer than the provincials towns. Most of the cities fall somewhere in between in terms of cost. However, there is an easy way to save money on your flight.Book with Ryanair, the so-called low-cost airline and do so well in advance of your flight to Ireland. This airline operates a ''no-frills policy" so it'll be cheap without being luxurious. As Ireland goes,in the summer i'd recommend somewhere coastal and scenic,though.City-wise i'd probably pick Galway or Cork over Waterford, though it's not the worst lace.Kilkenny's pretty good too.As with most cities, hostels are your best bet for value. Most of the Irish ones… [cont.] Answered by Jasmine J - Tue Jan 15 14:25:24 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "ireland" Ireland is a north-west European island lying to the west of Great Britain.
