A. Since the dawn of man. Think about it. Our predecessors were both crafty (making weapons out of stone, using animal skins for clothing etc..) They drew on wall caves, made pottery, used various plants to create colors, they fashioned jewelery and with time mans skill grew increasingly more efficient.
