The Arts and Crafts Movement was an international design movement that originated in Britain and flourished between 1880 and 1910. It was instigated by the artist and writer William Morris (1834–1896) in the 1860s and was inspired by the writings of John Ruskin (1819–1900). It influenced architecture, domestic design and the decorative arts, using simple forms and a medieval style of decoration. The movement was mainly although not exclusively based around the Bloomsbury set who took the natural world as it's main influence. There is too much to relate here, but the Liberty store in Londons Regent St was perhaps the largest known retailer and patron of the various artists involved. Copper,Pewter and pottery where the main mediums, but jewellery with precious and semi - precious stones was also prolific using both silver in the main but gold also.The influence of nature is easily detected by the portrayal of plants and trees. William Morris is apparently regarded as the grandad of the movement, he worked in paint and fabrics not forgetting pottery.
