Art Deco was a popular international art design movement from 1925 until the 1940s, affecting the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design, and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts, and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional, and modern.

The movement was a mix of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative.

Art Deco experienced a decline in popularity during the late 30s and early 40s, and soon fell out of public favor. It experienced a resurgence with the popularization of graphic design in the 1980s. Art Deco had a profound influence on many later artistic movements, such as Memphis and Pop art.

Surviving examples may still be seen in many different locations worldwide, in countries as diverse as the United Kingdom, Spain, Cuba, Indonesia, the Philippines, Romania, New Zealand and Brazil. Many classic examples still exist in the form of architecture in many major cities. The Empire State Building and The Chrysler Building, both in New York City, are two of the largest and best-known examples of the style.

If you look on Ebay or Ikea every one is claiming their object is Eames or Art Deco?
Q. What really defines these styles? What makes something Eames style? What makes it Art Deco style? Any help with definitions would be greatly appreciated. If you could refrain from using Wikpedia I would greatly appreciate it. I know it is not a reliable source since it is fluid and anyone can add to the text of it. Links are appreciated. I just want to learn about these 2 styles. I find them very interesting. I do not have a libral arts background and would like to learn more. I only learned about technology, so anything else is great. If you have book suggestions on furniture or archetecture that would be wonderful. If you can think of a better category for these questions please let me know. Well look at the Ikea stuff they are… [cont.]

A. Eames isn't a style, it's a famous (and very expensive)manufacturer of furniture. If you ever watch Frasier, he has an Eames chair - it's the brown leather one next to the door leading out to his balcony (yes, I watch too much TV sometimes). Art Deco was a style which reached the height of its popularity in the 1930s and early 1940s. The style can be seen in everything from jewelry to furniture to art to home decor to architecture. The Chrysler building in New York is considered the classic example of Art Deco architecture. The 1939 World's Fair in New York is a great place to find examples of Art Deco - check the many websites out there. I collect a lot of Art Deco pieces, and I share your frustration with Ebay. Unfortunately, it's… [cont.]

Where is good to visit in NYC to see echoes of the famous art deco (1920s/ 30s) era?
Q. Somewhere the public can actually visit or enter- perhaps there's a particular street, or a shopping complex, or a park? Does any of the old lifestyle remain? Cheers!
